Their inspiration? Dante Alighieri. Their reward? “Young Artists for Dante”, the international call for projects that, in his third edition, keeps encouraging the young generations to come face to face with the Poet and his work. Promoted by Ravenna Festival and the Municipality of Ravenna, in collaboration with the Dante Alighieri Society, the competition offers to the inventions and languages of young artists and Dante enthusiasts the chance to be protagonists of the events programmed at the Ancient Franciscan Cloisters from June 1 to July 5, 2018.

The selected shows will be produced by Ravenna Festival and included in the official programme of the 29th edition. Every day at 11 a.m., “Young Artists for Dante” will stage the tribute to the father of the Italian language in the Cloisters by his Tomb, symbol of the “Dantesque” city. This narrative all around Dante, with its programme within the wider Festival’s programme, confirms the Festival’s vocation to hold its events in the city’s most symbolical corners, a living testimony to its millenary heritage.

The Ancient Franciscan Cloisters are owned, managed, and kindly made available by the “Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna” Foundation. The Cloisters host the Centro Dantesco dei Frati Minori Conventuali with their precious Library, featuring 20 thousand volumes on Dante-related topics, and the Museo Dantesco managed by the Opera di Dante. These important presences represent the very heart of the “Area of silence”, the medieval quarters of Ravenna, where Dante once lived and his tomb now lies, holding his mortal remains.

The Call for Projects is open to young artists and Dante enthusiasts, and especially to groups, companies and associations the majority of whose members are under 30. Events will last up to 40 minutes, and will be aimed at promoting the tangible and intangible heritage of Dante Alighieri. The Call is open to all kinds of performative languages.
Not only were the proposals for the first two editions numerous, but they also revealed an incredibly rich panorama, alive with all sorts of creative academic/artistic collaborations, mixing theatre, dance, live music and, more unexpectedly, architecture, video art and creative writing.

The call of “Young Artists for Dante” proves the endless ability to interpret Dante’s work with freshness and originality, and also enriches the Festival’s days with a morning event which has already captivated the audience of citizens and tourists. Besides, it offers the chance to stimulate creative relationships with the schools and the artistic subjects in the region. Again this year, collaborations have been activated with the Artistic Secondary School “P.L. Nervi – G. Severini”, which has received a commission for this segment of the programme, and with Cantieri, a cultural association that since 1994 promotes and stimulate the development of a culture and practice on original research and original dance, and which will support this call through its networks dedicated to young dance authors.
