Chanticleer is internationally renowned as “an orchestra of voices”. The group features no instrumental accompaniment, just twelve male voices blending seamlessly from countertenor to bass and offering unique interpretations of a vocal repertoire ranging from medieval and Renaissance polyphony to contemporary music and jazz, occasionally venturing into gospel. Founded in San Francisco in 1978, the group takes its name from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to reflect the singers’ agility and versatility: in the tale, Chanticleer is a “clear-singing rooster” who cleverly evades a fox’s attack. The original line-up has, of course, evolved over the years to include new extraordinary young voices capable of engaging and thrilling audiences worldwide.
