Piero Piccioni was one of the most prominent names on the Italian music scene in the late 20th century, at a time when the film industry of the Belpaese was exporting its brand worldwide with the help of many talented composers. Among them, Piccioni was possibly the most jazz-influenced. In 1949, in New York, he teamed up with Charlie Parker and Max Roach, whose vibrant vitality he then introduced into the irreverent world of the so-called ‘Italian-style comedy’. He worked on more than 300 soundtracks with leading Italian directors, especially Francesco Rosi (with whom he had an almost exclusive partnership) and Alberto Sordi, a great friend of his. Piccioni’s son Jason and his ensemble are now paying him a well-deserved tribute on the 20th anniversary of his death.
