It was 1970 when Zubin Mehta’s first recording of the Domestic Symphony revealed a lesser-known side of Richard Strauss, who, after the battle-like tones of Ein Heldenleben and the apocalyptic notes of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, decided to indulge in this personal, domestic idyll — one of his most intimate and poetic compositions. Now, more than half a century later, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’s Honorary Life Conductor still shows great affection for Strauss’ masterpiece and continues to perform it in new and exciting ways. This time, he is combining it with Beethoven’s only violin concerto performed by Amira Abouzhara, a young prodigy who has already established herself as one of the most important talents of her generation.
