Journey to the West is a classic of Chinese literature, orally transmitted for centuries before it was written down in the 1500s. The story follows the journey to India (“the West”) of Tang Sanzang (inspired by the real-life Buddhist monk Xuanzang) and his three disciples, Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy) and Sha Wujing (the Sand Monk), who are traditionally described as having a brilliant and restless nature, impulsiveness and trustworthiness, respectively. This tale of adventure, spirituality and transformation has since inspired countless literary, theatrical and multimedia works. Most recently, the Grande Teatro di Lido Adriano has reworked it, reinterpreting the text across cultures and continents with its characteristic choral and participatory force.
