There was a time when new stars could be discovered entirely by chance. This happened to Carla Fracci, who, aged just 22, stepped in as an understudy on New Year’s Eve and was immediately promoted to prima ballerina at La Scala. Such legendary rises to stardom are now more structured and facilitated by events such as the Youth America Grand Prix Gala in New York, which recruits talent from masterclasses held at the Ravenna Festival. The best students from around the world are selected here for a programme to be performed on the stage of the Palazzo Mauro De André. They will progress from barre work to performing on stage, taking lessons with the stars in the studio and then performing alongside them under the spotlight. It’s a virtual passing of the baton that reads like a fairy tale.
