Nina is a tribute to Eunice Kathleen Waymon (1933-2003), the singer, pianist, writer, and civil rights activist better known by her pseudonym, Nina Simone. The role of Nina will be performed by Claron McFadden, an award-winning American soprano that has used radio and television recordings of Simone’s interviews and public speeches to create a complete mimetic portrait of the great artist. Fanny & Alexander’s well-honed technique of hetero-direction allows McFadden to inhabit Simone’s voice and bear witness to the various manifestations of her strong character and creative spirit. Ninacovers the most remarkable moments in the artist’s biography, from her poetic tensions to her struggle for the rights of women and Afro-Americans, revealing her most intimate frailties and wounds.
