Premiere

Imprisoned at the Charenton insane asylum under Napoleon, the Marquis de Sade and his inmates re-enact the assassination of Jean Paul Marat in a revolutionary and poetic performance. Similarly, in the present production, some fifty people, including disabled actors from the Ravenna-based permanent workshop ‘Il Teatro è Differenza’, will create a truly democratic performance space where bodies demonstrate the ferocity of gesture as well as its disarming beauty. In this Dionysian ritual, or catharsis, a community becomes theatre in a constant reversal of power and freedom, cruelty and the grotesque, short-circuiting the combinations of illness and confinement, imprisonment and freedom.
