Late in 1944, Glenn Miller died while flying to France to entertain American troops fighting against Nazi fascism. His plane did not make it across the Channel, but his music — the swing that drove dancers wild — was already conquering the world. It was as energetic as a slap in the face of old customs, and as seductive as the idea of freedom brightening the global horizon. Swing accompanied the Liberation, before colonising dreams and imagination across the globe. People listened to it at the dawn of a new world, before rock’n’roll took over and made Miller’s formula a little bit edgier and wilder. Since then, it has been passed down from one generation to the next, also thanks to this splendid orchestra.
