It all began in the late ’30s to give a boost to Mickey Mouse’s flagging career with an animated short film entitled The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It ended up as the boldest experiment by Walt Disney, the creative visionary who made the history of animated cinema and who, with Fantasia (1940), achieved his dream of blending images with classical music. Today, a new feature-length production has emerged from that revolutionary film and its equally extraordinary sequel, Fantasia 2000. The production features live performances of pieces such as Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’, Debussy’s Clair de lune, Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance and, of course, Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
