An archetypal figure and a universal symbol of rebellion, Antigone challenges our sense of responsibility and justice, reminding us of the present day, torn apart by wars and calls for divine justice. Following a series of comedies by Aristophanes, the latest of which, Lysistrata (“she who dissolves armies”), marked the start of a new four-year collaboration between Ravenna and Pompeii, Marco Martinelli now presents his first tragedy by Sophocles. He has worked with a hundred teenagers on the story of another powerful female figure who rebels against unjust laws. Driven by love, Antigone defies the world to give her brother Polynices a proper burial, against the will of the new ruler of Thebes. So: who are today’s tyrants and rebels? What is our Thebes? What are the injustices of our time?
