Although singing to one’s own accompaniment was common practice in the Renaissance, it now seems quaint — almost like a quirky new trend. However, when confronted with the extraordinary poetic talent of Giovanna Baviera, this practice takes on the significance of a rare, necessary choice. Born to an Irish mother and a Sicilian father, she embodies a blend of these cultural influences, displaying a determined gentleness shaped by exposure to diverse influences. Having transitioned from the violin to the more mysterious viola da gamba (and to singing!), Baviera has pursued an unusual path of inner and stylistic exploration. She will be in Ravenna not just for a concert, but for a residency that will be open to the public. Visitors are welcome to watch her study and analyse scores or prepare for various performances. At Palazzo Guiccioli, visitors will see her collaborating with Maria Vincenza Cabizza, a young composer whose work she will premiere, as well as with the Ravenna-based writer Cavezzali and the activist lawyer Cathy La Torre. With them, she will create musical journeys inspired by their words and work. For instance, she will bring to life the melancholic tale of a homeless man sleeping on a bench under the watchful gaze of two women observing him from their windows. Or she will transform the determination and courage of those who fight discrimination and injustice into sound. After all, art can — and must — be all of these things.
