Music was of the utmost importance to St Francis, who regarded it as “the most perfect manifestation of the life to come”. It was a constant presence throughout his life, from his youth — when he enjoyed singing troubadour songs with friends — to his later years, when he used it as a means of expressing his faith and praising God. He continued to sing the Canticle of the Creatures with his brothers until the very end of his life. In this anniversary year, the traditional Sunday liturgies will start in St Francis’ Basilica with a performance by its esteemed Cappella Musicale. They will then continue in the magnificent apse of Classe with Gregorian chants by the renowned Vox Clamantis, to be concluded in the Cathedral and at Santa Maria in Porto with the energy and talent of younger choirs.
