Christmas stirs the imagination of Neapolitan composers. Sacred devotion and secular elements blend together to create extraordinary works dedicated to the birth of the “Incarnate Word”, the “Divine Infant” whose light will overcome evil — pastorals, tarantellas, lullabies and arias brimming with pathos and combining spiritual fervour with ancient pagan rituals. The prestigious Cappella Neapolitana — formerly Pietà de’ Turchini — are perfect in recreating the soundscape of Baroque Naples with all its contradictions and emotions, building on the work initiated by Roberto De Simone, who regarded classical music and popular sacred traditions as part of the same heritage. Founded by Florio in 1987, the ensemble specialises in music from the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the recovery of rare musical heritage.
