The more you listen to others, the better you will develop your own unique voice. This seems to be the message of Pat Metheny’s project, Side-Eye, which explores two seemingly contradictory ideas: surrounding himself with a rotating cast of collaborators and paying tribute to the masters who shared part of their journey with one of the most acclaimed jazz guitarists. While it is no secret that Metheny’s six-string style is unique and instantly recognisable, not everyone can trace its evolution through the stages he shared with such diverse giants as Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall and David Bowie. Nor is it easy to shape a constantly changing line-up. In this case, he expands his core trio with Chris Fishman and Joe Dyson into a quintet, ensuring that every concert is truly unique.
