Orthodox and Catholic sacred music between tradition and modernity

Coro da Camera del Conservatorio di Ljubljana
choirmaster Ambrož Chopi

music Gustav Holst, Sergej Rachmaninov, Francis Poulenc and living Slovenian, Latvian and Belarusian composers

In both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, evening prayer challenges the darkness of night. This is why the prayers are filled with words that evoke light. By invoking Mary, the faithful mother at the foot of the cross, the songs celebrate an everlasting light that never fails, even in the darkest times.
The Ljubljana choir will take us on a musical journey intertwining the harmonies of Rachmaninov with the stylistic purity of Poulenc and reflecting Holst’s solid melodic structures in the new harmonic visions of contemporary Slovenian composers. Thus, our precious basilica will resonate with the interplay of the depths of the Christian East and the mystical transparency of Western Europe. Through song, the choir will evoke a sense of imminent salvation and gratitude, welcoming the serene peace of the evening.
