Zeinab, Intisar, Douha: three Palestinian women in the Church of the Annunciation, Nazareth, address Mary, the Mother of Jesus, called Maryam in the Quran. They cry out their prayers, sharing their pain as mothers who have lost their sons and brothers to the world’s injustice. Company Teatro delle Albe start a new collaboration with Luca Doninelli, shortlisted for the Campiello Award 2016, on a novel about Mary, a central figure in Islam and a “mediator”, a bridge-builder between Christianity, Islam and contemporary culture. In this Ravenna première, Ermanna Montanari will once again explore the potential of her own voice in the roles of the three women and Maryam herself, in an ideal counterpoint with the music of Luigi Ceccarelli.
