Out of character with its usual “wingman’s role” in classical orchestras, the double-bass here surprises the listener and reveals all its unexpected resources. In this ensemble, founded by Daniele Roccato and Stefano Scodanibbio, research on timbre and expression naturally results in collaborations with other artists. Like Sofia Gubaidulina, whose Studies in instrumental articulations and techniques create their own language, or whose Quaternion is built on parallel tonal plans. Or Philip Perocco, with his miniatures built from the memories of popular songs on the Great War, and Fabio Cifariello Ciardi, who contributes with a sort of voice/instruments struggle on the rhythms and inflections of Martin Luther King’s revolutionary I have a dream speech.
