Leonidas Kavakos
Sei Solo
(first part)

Johann Sebastian Bach
Sonatas and partitas for solo violin

Partita No. 3 in E major BWV 1006
Sonata No. 2 in A minor BWV 1003
Sonata No. 3 in C major BWV 1005

Bach’s iconic Six Sonatas and PartitasBWV 1001-1006 almost always mark a turning point in the career of any violinist. Leonidas Kavakos, violinist, concertmaster and conductor, reached this milestone last year with his double album Sei solo(Sony). The title is both a reminder of the challenge facing the performer, and a philologically precise description of the unprecedented formal construction of this collection for solo violin, which defies the traditional Baroque distinction between the ‘sonata da chiesa’ and the ‘sonata da camera’ in an attempt to reach the divine through music: and in this, as Kavakos says,“harmony’s rhythm and rhythm’s harmony are decisive assistants”.
