A Passage to India
Anoushka Shankar “Land of Gold”

Anoushka Shankar sitar

Sanjeev Shankar shehnai
Manu Delago hang & drum kit
Tom Farmer double bass, keyboards, electronic

The daughter and disciple of an artist father, Ravi Shankar, Anoushka soon revealed her talent: she was the first Indian woman nominated for a Grammy Award, and the youngest-ever nominee in the World Music category. But, beyond all labels, her music combines classical music training and diverse languages in a cross-cultural mix and frequent collaborations with artists like Sting, Herbie Hancock, Pepe Habichuela, Karsh Kale… Addressing such themes as women’s rights and social justice, Land of Gold is Anoushka’s heartfelt response to the refugee crisis, the trauma experienced by people fleeing war and poverty and looking for a safe place, hope and peace. Her sitar evokes the gamut of emotional expression, combining elements of classical minimalism, jazz and Indian classical styles.
