Singing as an expression of contemplative life seems to have grown out of the example of St Francis, who “overflowed with jubilation in the manner of a jester […] when the sweet melody of the spirit stirred in his breast”. It is therefore thanks to him that the figure of the jester was redeemed and given new dignity, becoming the model for a new style of communication destined to replace the complex rituals of “official” devotion with more popular means of expression. First and foremost, among these was the vernacular language, from which the seed of a new culture would sprout. The Micrologus Ensemble offers a musical reconstruction of the Canticle of the Sun, based on an original interpretation of the earliest sources, including lauds dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries.
