Sonata per pianoforte in sol maggiore op. 78 “Fantasia” D 894
“Above all, music is beauty and expressive power, and I think it’s crucial that it reaches an increasingly wide audience. Which is why I offer my performances and music in a variety of formats, not just concerts”. This is Filippo Gorini: a completely new and different kind of musician and concert performer, perhaps even revolutionary when measured against the relentless mechanisms of the so-called star system. His approach is, in a way, “Franciscan”. Despite being one of the protagonists of international piano performance at just 31, with Alfred Brendel and Mitsuko Uchida among his mentors, Gorini is not chasing easy success, performing in a different theatre every night with a plane to catch the next morning. Instead, he strives to establish a deeper, more fruitful relationship with his audience and the communities that warmly welcome him wherever he goes. One example of this is Sonata for 7 Cities, a project he undertook two years ago. He chose seven major cities around the world for his long residencies, starting in Vienna, then moving on to Hong Kong and Cape Town, and now heading to Milan. During these residencies, he combines high-profile performances in prestigious venues with interactions with students, as well as visits to universities, hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons. This spirit also informs his residency at the Festival, which doubles as a return to his paternal roots in Romagna. His constant aim is to push beyond the “surface” of music-making, as evidenced by his careful programme selection, which juxtaposes great classics with works commissioned from contemporary composers, sowing the seeds of tomorrow.
