All bound by the\u00a0<em>fil rouge<\/em>\u00a0of the liturgies, an itinerary where music and faith meet and visit, Sunday after Sunday, the churches of Ravenna.\u00a0<em>In templo Domini<\/em>\u00a0is a traditional, much appreciated part of the Ravenna Festival, that every summer combines the splendid churches \u2013 the keepers of Ravenna\u2019s heritage, art, spirituality \u2013 with music programmes that shed new light on the history of devotion in Europe, thanks to world-renowned artists. This year, the scores bear the signatures of two 15th-century composers, Guillaume Dufay and Johannes Ockeghem, but also of 17th-century Claudio Monteverdi and Aurelio Signoretti; there is also a tribute to Domenico Bartolucci, five years after his death. With regard to the artists: the ensemble Voces Suaves is from Switzerland, the Graindelavoix from Antwerpen, the Heinavanker from Estonia; Italy is represented by Ludus Vocalis from Ravenna itself and the choir of the Cathedral of Reggio Emilia. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/voces-suaves-vocal-ensemble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong> Sunday, 10 June at 10 am<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Voces Suaves<\/strong>\u00a0will perform in this year\u2019s first liturgy. The Basilea-based ensemble was founded in 2012 and has been working all over Europe; their interest focuses on\u00a0Renaissance and Baroque music, combining historical performance practice to a warm and full overall sound.\u00a0For the evening concert in the\u00a0\u201cDante\u2019s basilica\u201d of San Francesco (<a href=\" http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/quivi-sospiri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong>Quivi sospiri<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a09 June at 9 pm), the eight members of the ensemble will undertake a journey through the\u00a0worlds of the\u00a0<em>Commedia<\/em>; while the liturgy at\u00a0<strong>Sant\u2019Apollinare in Classe<\/strong>\u00a0will feature music by\u00a0Claudio Monteverdi, Luca Marenzio, and Carlo Gesualdo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/graindelavoix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong> Sunday, 17 June at 10.30 am<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a tribute to Flemish composer Guillaume Dufay, a central figure of 15th-century music who was sought out by French, Flemish, and Italian courts, by popes, princes, and nobles. He was probably the most influential musician of his time \u2013 to the point that the first 60 years of the 15th century are sometimes referred to as the\u00a0<em>age of Dufay<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 and the recipient of the tribute paid by\u00a0<strong>Graindelavoix<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>San Vitale<\/strong>. As pioneers of a courageous and innovative approach to ancient repertoires, the Belgian ensemble Graindelavoix confers great importance to the individual contribution of its members, each of whom has been selected with great care. With the lead of anthropologist and ethnomusicologist\u00a0Bj\u00f6rn Schmelzer, they will also perform in an evening concert in the same Basilica\u00a0(<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/vespri-ciprioti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong>Cypriot Vespers<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0at 9.30 pm).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/ensemble-heinavanker-2-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong> Sunday, 24 June, at 10.30 am<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the third liturgy takes place in the\u00a0<strong>Basilica of San Vitale<\/strong>, this time with the\u00a0<strong>Ensemble Heinavanker<\/strong>\u00a0in the occasion of the centenary of the Estonian independence. The programme ranges from Johannes Ockeghem, another key-composer of the French-Flemish School of the 15th century, and compositions by Margo\u00a0K\u00f6lar, the artistic director of the ensemble. Traditional Estonian music will be included as well, as a distinctive feature of Heinavanker\u2019s repertoires, and will be performed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/ensemble-heinavanker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong>evening concert<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0as well (at 9.30 pm at San Vitale).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/ludus-vocalis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong> Sunday, 1 July, at 11.30 am<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0<strong>Ludus Vocalis<\/strong>\u00a0will be in\u00a0<strong>Sant\u2019Agata Maggiore<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 with Stefano\u00a0Sintoni\u2019s lead \u2013 for a tribute to Cardinal Domenico Bartolucci, who was a composer and the long-time director of the Choir of the Sistine Chapel, and died in 2013. In 1952 Lorenzo Perosi appointed him vice-<em>maestro<\/em>\u00a0of the Sistine Chapel; after Perosi\u2019s death in 1956 Bartolucci was made director of the Choir of the Sistine Chapel by Pope Pio XII; he kept the position until 1997. He is considered one of the most important interpreters of Palestrina and composed over 40 volumes of madrigali and masses, hymns and oratories, all created under the name of the love and respect for the great tradition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/cappella-musicale-della-cattedrale-di-reggio-emilia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #890e32;\"><strong> Sunday, 8 July, at 11 am<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<em>In templo Domini\u00a0<\/em>ends at the\u00a0<strong>Basilica Metropolitana<\/strong>\u00a0with a mass led by Monsignor Lorenzo Ghizzoni, Archbishop of Ravenna-Cervia. Aurelio Signoretti\u2019s\u00a0<em>Missa sine nomine<\/em>\u00a0will be performed in the occasion. Signoretti was\u00a0<em>maestro di cappella<\/em>\u00a0in Reggio Emilia and Primo Iotti, who curated the transcription and orchestration of the\u00a0<em>Missa<\/em>, will conduct (and play the organ for) the\u00a0<strong>Choir of the Reggio Emilia Cathedral<\/strong>\u00a0for this extraordinarily beautiful and deeply intense composition dating back to 1626.
