{"id":4584,"date":"2016-09-27T17:00:35","date_gmt":"2016-09-27T15:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/?p=4584"},"modified":"2016-09-27T18:25:03","modified_gmt":"2016-09-27T16:25:03","slug":"autumn-trilogy-along-the-danube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/autumn-trilogy-along-the-danube\/","title":{"rendered":"Autumn Trilogy: Along the Danube River with Countess Maritza, The Bat, and The Merry Widow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From October 14th to 23rd Ravenna Festival\u2019s Autumn Trilogy presents an intense Danubian triptych <!--more-->that pays homage to the great civilisation that flourished while the Austro-Hungarian Empire was coming to its twilight, when Vienna and other cities of the Empire like Budapest played cradle to an extraordinary multicultural ferment. The Alighieri Theatre will host the Italian premiere of three productions by the major Hungarian theatres \u2013 Operetta Theatre in Budapest, Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen, and Szeged Theatre \u2013 which contribute to maintain the excellent level of a tradition that has never declined: <em>Gr\u00e4fin Mariza<\/em> (<em>Countess Maritza<\/em>),<em> Die Fledermaus<\/em> (<em>The Bat<\/em>), and <em>Die lustige Witwe<\/em> (<em>The Merry Widow<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>It will be a tribute to a genre of musical theatre, the \u201coperetta\u201d, which produced such masterpieces as the ones presented in Ravenna, created by the greatest composers of this genre: Emmerich K\u00e1lm\u00e1n, Johann Strauss, and Franz Leh\u00e1r. The titles of this Trilogy were all staged for the first time in the Theater an der Wien in the course of fifty years, in Austro-Hungarian Wien, capital of that multiethnic and multinational Empire for which the Danube river was one of the most important transport routes. If Strauss, who created <em>The Bat<\/em>, is reputed the father of the Wien operetta, Leh\u00e1r\u2019s <em>Merry Widow<\/em> was exceptionally and unexpectedly successful in the Wien of Freud, Mahler, Schnitzler, and Sch\u00f6nberg. Almost twenty years later, Hungarian composer K\u00e1lm\u00e1n ends the cycle, including Gypsy and Magyar elements in this already very popular genre which, in <em>Countess Maritza<\/em>, winks at one of Strauss\u2019s operettas. These masterpieces will be presented in their integral version, which flawlessly combines drama, music, and dance, and represents the illustrious forefather of the musical theatre of <u>Broadway<\/u> and the West End, thanks to composers like Offenbach and Gilbert &amp; Sullivan, but also of the Italian musical comedy.<\/p>\n<p>The journey along the Danube river, after three days of dazzling performances in the city centre, will end with the Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra (Sunday, October 23<sup>rd<\/sup>), for the first time in Italy, an orchestra of violins, violas, cellos, double basses, clarinets, and cimbalombs in the best Mittel-European tradition, whose programme will alternate scores by famous composers such as Liszt, Bart\u00f3k, Kod\u00e1ly, Brahms, \u010cajkovskij, and Strauss to traditional Hungarian and Gypsy music.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ravenna.artacom.it\/\/biglietteria\/listaEventiPub.do?codice=trilogia\" target=\"_blank\">Online pre-sale<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From October 14th to 23rd Ravenna Festival\u2019s Autumn Trilogy presents an intense Danubian triptych<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":4597,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[60],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4584","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
