{"id":35774,"date":"2025-03-08T11:00:34","date_gmt":"2025-03-08T10:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/?p=35774"},"modified":"2025-05-22T09:37:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T07:37:34","slug":"donde-hay-musica-36","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/donde-hay-musica-36\/","title":{"rendered":"Donde hay m\u00fasica no puede haber cosa mala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Donde hay m\u00fasica no puede haber cosa mala, or \u2018where there is music there can be no evil\u2019: these words from <em>Don Quixote<\/em> reflect the spirit of the Ravenna Festival, which has always found a space for confrontation and dialogue in music and the performing arts, but the title quotation of the Festival\u2019s 36<sup>th<\/sup> edition also offers an opportunity to reflect on courage, from the classic epic to Cervantes&#8217;s knight-errant, up to today\u2019s heroism: civil and spiritual courage, the courage to begin again, to create and hope. While Riccardo Muti opens the Festival on 31 May with his Cherubini Orchestra, the programme includes guests such as Zubin Mehta, Daniel Harding, Accademia Bizantina, The Tallis Scholars, Uri Caine, Cat Power, Heiner Goebbels, Max Richter, Enrico Rava, Lakecia Benjamin&#8230; Once again this year, Ravenna Festival boasts more than one hundred performances, with the involvement of more than a thousand artists, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of Ravenna, the main partner Eni and the sponsors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/?qy=2025\"><strong>&gt; Discover all the events<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nota-Stampa-RF2025-ENG-agg-22-maggio.pdf\"><strong>&gt; Read the extended press release<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Heroes for the New Millennium<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIf the <strong><em>Bhagavad Gita<\/em><\/strong>, the starting point for the Grande Teatro di Lido Adriano, revolves around warrior Arjuna, in Ariosto\u2019s <em>Orlando furioso<\/em>, the source of Handel&#8217;s main characters in the operas staged for the <strong>Autumn Trilogy<\/strong>, the paladins are men in the grip of passions. Teatro delle Albe\/Ravenna Teatro&#8217;s <strong><em>Don Chisciotte ad ardere<\/em><\/strong> calls us to participate in the dream of the knight-errant, while <strong>Marco Baliani<\/strong> invites us to contemplate \u2018silent courage\u2019. <strong><em>Voices and Music from Palestine<\/em><\/strong>, in collaboration with the Festival delle Culture, features four concerts, while <strong><em>Romagna in fiore<\/em><\/strong> includes nine sustainable afternoon events to celebrate communities in the Romagna territories devastated by the floods. The women of Aristophanes\u2019s <strong><em>Lysistrata<\/em><\/strong> are civil heroines on strike against the war; Marco Martinelli \u201cbrings back to life\u201d this ancient comedy with teenagers from the Neapolitan area. The common thread of civil courage runs through the opera <strong><em>Anita<\/em><\/strong> about Garibaldi&#8217;s companion, Uri Caine&#8217;s <strong><em>The Passion of Octavius Catto<\/em><\/strong> dedicated to the African-American activist murdered in 1871, and the dance performance <strong><em>Fragolesangue<\/em><\/strong>. The courage to dare is also often decisive in the arts \u2013 think of Bob Dylan&#8217;s \u2018electric choice\u2019 with the concert \u2018of the Royal Albert Hall\u2019 in 1966 reproposed by <strong>Cat Power<\/strong> or Ennio Morricone&#8217;s relationship with cinema, explored in CNN\/Aterballetto\u2019s <strong><em>Notte Morricone<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Music, One and Manifold<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Riccardo Muti<\/strong> is on the podium of his <strong>Cherubini Orchestra<\/strong> for the opening concert with violinist <strong>Giuseppe Gibboni<\/strong> and a second concert in July, but the symphonic section includes <strong>Zubin Mehta<\/strong> with the <strong>Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino<\/strong> and violinist <strong>Amira Abouzahra<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel Harding<\/strong> at the head of the <strong>Orchestra dell&#8217;Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia<\/strong>. <strong>Accademia Bizantina<\/strong> dedicates <strong><em>Vivaldi d&#8217;amore<\/em><\/strong> to the Red Priest\u2019s concertos for strings, violin and viola d&#8217;amore with conductor and soloist <strong>Alessandro Tampieri<\/strong>. The contemporary music section features <strong>Max Richter<\/strong> with his most recent album <em>In A Landscape<\/em> and <strong>Heiner Goebbels<\/strong>\u2019s<strong> <em>Surrogate Cities<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 the composer will also curate the mise en espace of this impressive orchestral cycle in the new Ravenna Festival production. The <strong>Duo Aria<\/strong> pays tribute to Luciano Berio on the centenary of his birth, while the new generation of pianism is represented by <strong>Pietro Fresa<\/strong> and <strong>Alexander Gadjiev<\/strong>. Among the chamber music ensembles, eclectic <strong>vision string quartet<\/strong> from Berlin, <strong>Trio Orelon<\/strong> performing Haydn, Beethoven and Arensky, <strong>Signum Saxophone Quartet<\/strong> ranging from Grieg to Piazzolla, <strong>Marco Albonetti<\/strong> and the <strong>FontanaMix Ensemble<\/strong> for world music arranged by Fred Sturm, and <strong>\u0160irom<\/strong> with its avant-garde folk. Gilberto Cappelli&#8217;s opera dedicated to <strong>Anita<\/strong> Garibaldi is staged at the Fattoria Guiccioli, where she died in 1849. The <strong>Zawinul Legacy Band 3.0<\/strong> retraces the musical odyssey of the jazz fusion pioneer and <strong><em>The Wall &amp; Pink Floyd Greatest Hits<\/em><\/strong> unites the MM Dance Company, Pink Sonic, the Orchestra Citt\u00e0 di Ferrara e il Coro del Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, while with <strong><em>Rapsodia fantastica<\/em><\/strong> Giacomo Cuticchio\u2019s music meets his father Mimmo\u2019s Teatro dei Pupi, and <strong>Vincenzo Capezzuto<\/strong> and the <strong>Motus Mandolin Trio<\/strong> celebrate the 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century Neapolitan song. In Cervia-Milano Marittima, <em>Il Trebbo in musica<\/em> includes <strong>Fabrizio Bosso<\/strong> and <strong>Julian Oliver Mazzariello<\/strong>&#8216;s tribute to Pino Daniele, <strong>Aldo Cazzullo<\/strong> and <strong>Moni Ovadia<\/strong> with <em>Il romanzo della Bibbia<\/em>, <strong>Mario Tozzi<\/strong> and jazzman <strong>Enzo Favata<\/strong> for a geological-musical examination of the Mediterranean, <strong>Dardust<\/strong> with his <em>Urban Impressionism<\/em>, a new production with <strong>Carlo Lucarelli<\/strong>, <em>La Traviata sono io<\/em> with <strong>Alessio Boni<\/strong> on a text by <strong>Filippo Arriva<\/strong>, and singer <strong>Arooj Aftab<\/strong> with her most recent album <em>Night Reign<\/em>. The trio of concerts at the Pavaglione di Lugo opens with the Italian premiere of <strong>Uri Caine<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>The Passion of Octavius Catto<\/em>, followed by <strong>Enrico Rava<\/strong> and <strong>Stefano Bollani<\/strong>, and <strong>Malika Ayane<\/strong>, for the first time in a \u2018symphonic version\u2019 with <strong>La Corelli Orchestra<\/strong>. Palazzo San Giacomo in Russi is the setting for <strong><em>The Night of<\/em><\/strong><strong> <em>Spiritual Jazz<\/em><\/strong> with Lakecia Benjamin, Hamid Drake and James Brandon Lewis, and <strong><em>The Long Irish Night<\/em><\/strong> with the Dervish, Derek Hickey, Mick O&#8217;Brien and Ciara N\u00ed Bhriain, and the Birkin Tree.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Cantare Amantis Est<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAt the centre of the <em>Cantare amantis est<\/em> project, curated by <strong>Anna Leonardi<\/strong> and <strong>Michele Marco Rossi<\/strong>, is a call to choirs and choir singers from all over Italy to take part in rehearsals and lessons on Verdi&#8217;s pages under the guidance of <strong>Riccardo Muti<\/strong>; a call consistent with the <em>Roads of Friendship <\/em>project, creating bridges of brotherhood since 1997 through the universal language of music. <em>Another Bach in the Wall<\/em> will present the murals created by artists of the <em>Call to the Arts<\/em> and the Metropolitan Basilica will host a Jubilee concert with the Cherubini Orchestra led by <strong>Hossein Pishkar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>In the Basilicas<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Festival commissioned a new sacred performance: <strong><em>Rut, raccolti di speranza<\/em><\/strong> was composed by Marianna Acito to a libretto by Francesca Masi. The sacred-themed performances include Dietrich Buxtehude\u2019s <strong><em>Membra Jesu Nostri<\/em><\/strong> entrusted to the Choir &amp; Ensemble 1685 of the Ravenna\u2019s Conservatoire, with the visual project by the Academy of Fine Arts, while the oratorio <strong><em>San Giovanni Battista<\/em><\/strong> composed by Alessandro Stradella for the Jubilee Year 1675 is performed by the Ensemble Mare Nostrum. The 500<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of Palestrina&#8217;s birth is celebrated in San Vitale by the <strong>Tallis Scholars<\/strong>, together with Arvo P\u00e4rt&#8217;s 90<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, and the vocal ensemble <strong>Odhecaton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>A Festival that Dances<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe return of the <strong><em>Les \u00e9toiles<\/em><\/strong> gala curated by Daniele Cipriani closes the summer programme in a <em>pour homme<\/em> version, but dance also pays tribute to Ennio Morricone with <strong><em>Notte Morricone<\/em><\/strong> by the Centro Coreografico Nazionale\/Aterballetto (which also proposes <strong><em>MicroDanze<\/em><\/strong> at the Classis Museum). Double homage to Micha van Hoecke with the re-staging of <strong><em>La derni\u00e8re danse?<\/em><\/strong> by Miki Matsuse with the Balletto di Roma and the photographic exhibition <strong><em>La vie d&#8217;artiste<\/em><\/strong>. Also premiering <strong>Fragolesangue<\/strong> by Monica Francia, Ida Malfatti and Zoe Francia Lamattina, a collective experience that reckons with the narratives of another poetic-political era.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>The Theatre as a Mirror of the World<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nWith <strong><em>Lysistrata<\/em><\/strong>, Marco Martinelli \u2018brings back to life\u2019 Aristophanes, thanks to the dialogue between Ravenna and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. If Lysistrata represents civil and pacifist commitment, the portrait of the modern hero includes <strong><em>Don Chisciotte ad ardere<\/em><\/strong> by Albe\/Ravenna Teatro with the citizens of Public Call; the three parts of the project (including the new third part) will be staged between Palazzo Malagola, Palazzo di Teodorico, and Rasi Theatre. The Grande Teatro Lido Adriano will instead confront the <strong><em>Bhagavad gita<\/em><\/strong>, reinterpreted with the involvement of young people and adults from the cosmopolitan resort on the coast. The variations on the theme are completed with <strong><em>Del coraggio silenzioso<\/em><\/strong>, a performance by and with Marco Baliani.
