Riccardo Muti leads the Vienna Philharmonic for the opening concert on May 11, while \u2013 one year after the flooding in Romagna \u2013 the Festival brings free concerts to the affected areas. Guests of the summer programmes include Simon Rattle, Kirill Petrenko, Accademia Bizantina, Eleonora Abbagnato, Sergio Bernal, the Ballet de l&#8217;Op\u00e9ra de Lyon, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Giovanni Sollima, Mario Brunello, Paolo Fresu and Omar Sosa, Ian Bostridge, ANOHNI, Kula Shaker&#8230; Once again this year, the Festival boasts over one hundred performances and features more than a thousand artists, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of Ravenna, the main partner Eni and the sponsors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/?qy=2024\"><strong>&gt; Discover all the events<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Press-Release-RF2024-1.pdf\"><strong>&gt; Read the press release<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Anima Mundi<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe soul of the world is collapsing, as proved by the destruction of ecosystems, the depletion of resources, and climate change\u2026 The search for a new balance concerns live events as well. On four weekends between May and June, <em>Romagna in fiore<\/em> is a series of free events in the name of solidarity and sustainability, held in the areas affected by the flood in May 2023 and featuring Italian artists. While in the Basilica of Sant&#8217;Apollinare in Classe <strong>Ottavio Dantone<\/strong> leads <strong>Accademia Bizantina<\/strong> in Haydn&#8217;s <em>Creation<\/em>, overflowing with wonder before the beauty of nature, the <strong><em>Qatsi Trilogy<\/em><\/strong> by Godfrey Reggio and Philip Glass, presented with original music performed live by the <strong>Philip Glass Ensemble<\/strong>, is a look at the relationship between man and the world (and a Ravenna Festival production including a world premiere). The theme of global warming is close to the heart of <strong><em>Lo sciamano di ghiaccio (The Ice Shaman<\/em><\/strong>), a new work of multimedia theatre dedicated to the life of the Inuit. American singer <strong>ANOHNI<\/strong> with her band the Johnsons invites us to change our approach to social structures and relations within the biosphere. The <em>Via Sancti Romualdi<\/em> project features a talk on the future of food, between sustainability and education, with <strong>Carlo \u2018Carlin\u2019 Petrini<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Anima Hominis<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nIn many religions, the deity is also the first artist, a creative force that shapes the world; such an experience is renewed on a scale with every art practice. The Classis Museum hosts the <strong><em>Call to the Arts<\/em><\/strong>, with which <strong>Cristina Mazzavillani Muti<\/strong> invites young people to engage in a variety of languages, under the artistic direction of Michele Marco Rossi and Anna Leonardi. Participation is also the keyword for the Aristophanes&#8217; <strong><em>Pluto<\/em><\/strong> which <strong>Marco Martinelli<\/strong> brings back to life with teenagers from the Naples area, for the <strong>Grande Teatro di Lido Adriano<\/strong> with the Indian fables of <strong><em>Panchatantra<\/em><\/strong>, and for the <strong><em>Don Chisciotte ad ardere <\/em><\/strong>by <strong>Teatro delle Albe \/ Ravenna Teatro<\/strong>. Creativity and talent can also offer a chance to overcome obstacles and discrimination. With <em>Nina<\/em>, Fanny &amp; Alexander celebrate African-American singer Nina Simone, while the <strong>Marian Consort<\/strong> performs works by Vicente Lusitano, probably the first published black composer in 17<sup>th<\/sup>-century Europe. The Festival&#8217;s multicultural programme includes <strong><em>She, Elle, Lei<\/em><\/strong> with <strong>Almar&#8217;a<\/strong>, the Mediterranean women&#8217;s orchestra, with <strong>Ginevra Di Marco<\/strong> and the <strong>BabelNova Orchestra<\/strong>; in Russi, the alternative country of <strong>Calexico<\/strong> and <strong><em>The Long Night of BalFolk<\/em><\/strong> to dance from the north to the south of Europe; at Villa Masini, <strong><em>The Music of the Soul<\/em><\/strong> featuring Albanian jazz artist <strong>Elina Duni<\/strong> and French-Syrian <strong>Na\u00efssam Jalal<\/strong> and <strong><em>A piedi nudi sulla terra<\/em><\/strong>, an installation conceived by Elio Germano, with Folco Terzani\u2019s words, classical Indian music and asram rituals.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Music, One and Manifold<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAfter the opening concert at the head of the <strong>Vienna Philharmonic<\/strong> for Mozart\u2019s Haffner Symphony and Schubert\u2019s Symphony No. 9, <strong>Riccardo Muti<\/strong> leads his <strong>Cherubini Orchestra<\/strong> in a tribute to Ferruccio Busoni, with clarinettist Simone Nicoletta, and in the <strong><em>Roads of Friendship<\/em><\/strong> concerts, in Ravenna and Lampedusa, for <strong>Giovanni Sollima<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Stabat Mater<\/em> on verses by <strong>Filippo Arriva<\/strong>. In memory of those who have lost their life in the attempt to cross the Mediterranean, this year\u2019s Friendship project includes <strong><em>Non dirmi che hai paura<\/em><\/strong>, a new performance about Somalian athlete Samia Yusuf Omar, also a victim of the tragedy of migrants. First-time guests <strong>Kirill Petrenko<\/strong> and <strong>Simon Rattle<\/strong> lead respectively the <strong>Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester,<\/strong> to celebrate Bruckner\u2019s 200<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, and the <strong>Chamber Orchestra of Europe <\/strong>with mezzo <strong>Magdalena\u00a0Ko\u017een\u00e1<\/strong>. The 16<sup>th<\/sup>-century Loggetta Lombardesca cloister hosts tenor <strong>Ian Bostridge<\/strong> for a tribute to Lord Byron, the <strong>Philharmonic Five<\/strong> of the Vienna Philharmonics, the <strong>Chicago Symphony Brass Quintet<\/strong>, and <strong>Michele Campanella<\/strong> with the Quartetto Indaco. Guest pianists include <strong>Filippo Gorini<\/strong> and <strong>David Fray<\/strong>, the latter performing with violinist <strong>Renaud Capu\u00e7on<\/strong>. <strong>Le<\/strong> <strong>Po\u00e8me Harmonique<\/strong> presents the reconstruction of a 17<sup>th<\/sup>-century carnival featuring music, circus, and theatre, whereas <strong>La Stagione Armonica<\/strong> performs in both Orazio Vecchi\u2019s <em>Amfiparnaso<\/em> and a tribute to Luigi Nono. The Pavaglione in Lugo hosts acclaimed Sicilian duo <strong>Colapesce Dimartino<\/strong> with the <strong>Orchestra La Corelli<\/strong>, post-Britpop <strong>Kula Shaker<\/strong>, and an evening with <strong>John De Leo Jazzabilly Lovers<\/strong>,<strong> Rita Marcotulli <\/strong>and<strong> Enrico Rava<\/strong>. The <em>Trebbo in musica 2.4<\/em> in Cervia includes <strong>Laura Morante<\/strong>&#8216;s homage to Puccini, a talk with <strong>Pupi Avati<\/strong>, <strong>Margherita Vicario<\/strong> backed by La Corelli, Ethiopian music with <strong><em>Maqeda<\/em><\/strong>, <em>Food<\/em> featuring <strong>Paolo<\/strong> <strong>Fresu<\/strong> and <strong>Omar Sosa<\/strong>, a talk with <strong>Riccarda Casadei<\/strong> to celebrate <em>Romagna mia<\/em>, and the <strong>Orchestra 014<\/strong> &#8216;s homage to film music composer Piero Piccioni.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>And There Was Light: Music in the Basilicas<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe Basilica of Sant&#8217;Apollinare in Classe hosts, in addition to the <em>Creation<\/em> with Accademia Bizantina, the <em>Messa per Sant&#8217;Apollinare<\/em> with the <strong>Cappella Marciana<\/strong> led by <strong>Marco Gemmani<\/strong>. The Basilica of San Vitale is the stunning backdrop for the concerts of the Marian Consort and the <strong>Irini Ensemble<\/strong>, the latter performing in a programme dedicated to the (failed) attempt to reunite the churches of East and West in the late 15th century. In the Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista, <strong><em>Dilexi<\/em><\/strong> composed by Danilo Comitini and dedicated to the Roman empress Galla Placidia makes its debut; in the same basilica, Porpora&#8217;s oratorio <strong><em>Il trionfo della Divina Giustizia ne&#8217; tormenti e morte di Ges\u00f9 Cristo<\/em><\/strong>, with the <strong>Ensemble Dolce Concento<\/strong> led by <strong>Nicola Valentini<\/strong>. The Sunday liturgies of <em>In templo domini<\/em> features Italian and foreign ensembles, while the Domus dei Tappeti di Pietra hosts <strong><em>De Rerum Natura<\/em><\/strong>, a cycle of literary and musical digressions on the work of Lucretius, curated by La Corelli.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>A Festival that Dances<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe <strong>Ballet de l&#8217;Op\u00e9ra de Lyon<\/strong> pays tribute to Merce Cunningham with <em>Cunningham Forever<\/em> <em>(<\/em>a diptych of<em> Beach Birds<\/em> and <em>Biped<\/em>), while <strong><em>Les \u00e9toiles<\/em><\/strong> gala curated by Daniele Cipriani features <strong>Eleonora Abbagnato<\/strong>, and Spanish dance star <strong>Serge Bernal<\/strong> presents <strong><em>SeR<\/em><\/strong> for the first time in Italy. Also premiering are <strong>Virgilio Sieni<\/strong> and <strong>Mario Brunello<\/strong>\u2019s <strong><em>Un amico<\/em><\/strong> dedicated to Ezio Bosso, and <strong><em>redrum<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>gruppo nanou<\/strong>, a homage to Stephen King&#8217;s <em>The Shining<\/em> and Stanley Kubrick&#8217;s film. The <strong>Progetto<\/strong> <strong>RIC.CI <\/strong>curated by Marinella Guatterini tackles <strong><em>Fragili film \/ Solo agli specchi<\/em><\/strong> by Marianna Troise. The spaces of the Classis Museum will be inhabited by <strong>MicroDanze<\/strong> by <strong>Aterballetto<\/strong>, 6-7 minute dance performances.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>The Theatre as a Mirror of the World<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThe <strong>Grande Teatro di Lido Adriano<\/strong> continues its journey through non-European literature with <strong><em>Panchatantra<\/em><\/strong>, a reinterpretation of traditional Indian fables with the involvement of dozens of young people and adults. <strong>Marco Martinelli<\/strong>\u2019s four-year project to bring Aristophanes\u2019 comedies back to life, commissioned by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, reaches its third year of life. <strong><em>Don Chisciotte ad ardere<\/em><\/strong> also continues with Marco Martinelli and <strong>Ermanna Montanari<\/strong> of <strong>Teatro delle Albe\/Ravenna Teatro<\/strong>, with original music by <strong>Leda<\/strong>. In <strong><em>Nina<\/em> <\/strong>by<strong> Fanny &amp; Alexander<\/strong>, award-winning American soprano <strong>Claron McFadden<\/strong> inhabits the voice, successes and frailties of the African-American singer and activist Nina Simone. Music is also part of the dramaturgy in Stravinsky&#8217;s classic <strong><em>Histoire du soldat<\/em><\/strong>, brought to the stage by the <strong>Figli d&#8217;Arte Cuticchio<\/strong>, Mimmo Cuticchio and the soloists of the Cherubini Orchestra, as well as in the aforementioned <strong><em>Non dirmi che hai paura<\/em><\/strong>, which includes music by Peter Gabriel and Jill Gabriel, under licence from Real World Music Ltd. The show, based on the book by Giuseppe Catozzella, is directed by Laura Ruocco.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>The Autumn Trilogy<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nTitled <em>Wandering Heroes in Search of Peace<\/em>, this year\u2019s Autumn Trilogy (15-19 November) takes us to the roots of bel canto and the origins of opera, in the atmospheres of 17th-century baroque. With the complicity of <strong>Accademia Bizantina<\/strong> and <strong>Ottavio Dantone<\/strong>, <strong>Pier Luigi Pizzi<\/strong> presents two new productions: the first is Monteverdi&#8217;s <strong><em>Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria<\/em><\/strong> and the second is dedicated to Purcell, joining his ode to Saint Cecilia to <strong><em>Dido and Aeneas<\/em><\/strong>.
