One hundred years after the birth of Pier Paolo Pasolini, the Ravenna Festival\u2019s 33rd edition travels \u201cBetween Flesh and Heaven\u201d, starting from Azio Corghi\u2019s composition by the same name for the opening concert with Daniel Harding and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. From 1 June to 21 July, the words Pasolini used to describe his momentous encounter with Bach\u2019s Violin Sonatas draw a not only musical thread that involves such artists as Giuseppe Gibboni, Accademia Bizantina, Elio Germano. The opposition of human and divine expressed by the title also offers a chance to explore the many facets of the sacred \u2013 with the mystery plays on St. Francis and St. Augustine for the Basilica of San Vitale, Britten\u2019s\u00a0Canticles<\/em>\u00a0with Ian Bostridge, Battiato\u2019s\u00a0Messa Arcaica<\/em>\u2026 While Riccardo Muti leads his Cherubini Orchestra on the\u00a0Roads of Friendship<\/em>\u00a0and the final concert, among the guests are also Gidon Kremer, Christoph Eschenbach, Jordi Savall, Giovanni Sollima and Enrico Melozzi\u2019s 100Cellos, PFM, Diana Krall, La Rappresentante di Lista, and \u2013 for the dance section \u2013 the B\u00e9jart Ballet Lausanne, Hofesh Shechter II, and a tribute to Micha van Hoecke. The programme includes the \u201cout of town\u201d events in Cervia-Milano Marittima, in the Pavaglione in Lugo and at the Palazzo S. Giacomo in Russi. From 31 October to 6 November, the Autumn Trilogy celebrates secular love with Mozart and Da Ponte\u2019s masterpieces in the productions from the royal palaces of Drottningholm and Versailles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tribute to Pier Paolo Pasolini<\/strong><\/span>
\nAfter the 25 May preview, entrusted to\u00a0Ludovico Einaudi<\/strong>\u00a0and his new album\u00a0Underwater<\/em>, the 33rd edition opens under the double sign of Pasolini and music with the opening concert and Corghi\u2019s composition (the programme is completed by Beethoven\u2019s\u00a0Egmont<\/em>\u00a0Overture and Dvorak\u2019s Symphony No. 7). Pasolini’s favourite Bach\u2019s Sonatas and Partitas will be performed by\u00a0Giuseppe Gibboni<\/strong>, the\u00a0Musical Offering<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Accademia Bizantina<\/strong>\u00a0and Ottavio Dantone, the Brandenburg Concertos by the\u00a0Ensemble Zefiro<\/strong>, and Goldberg Variations by\u00a0David Fray<\/strong>. The tribute to Pasolini is also paid in the languages of cinema with a film festival in the Rocca Brancaleone, dance (with the homage included in the B\u00e9jart Ballet\u2019s programme), and theatre. For TeatroNove, Eugenio Sideri directs\u00a0Cal\u0113re<\/em><\/strong>, the country paths that become a metaphor of the bewilderment of the next generation in a world where \u201cdevelopment does not always mean progress\u201d; in\u00a0Bimba \u201822<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>Elena Bucci (Le belle bandiere) plays Laura Betti, a central figure in Pasolini\u2019s human and artistic life. Within the\u00a0Il Trebbo in musica<\/em>, Cervia hosts two events dedicated to Pasolini, entrusted respectively to singer-songwriter Vasco Brondi, and Elio Germano and Teho Teardo.<\/p>\n

Between Flesh and Heaven<\/strong><\/span>
\nBenjamin Britten\u2019s\u00a0Canticles<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are imbued with intense spirituality: three-time Grammy winner Ian Bostridge will perform them in the Basilica of Sant\u2019Apollinare in Classe. Singer-songwriter Franco Battiato danced on the border between sacred and secular for a long time; the Festival remembers him with the performance of his\u00a0Messa Arcaica<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>and his mystical songs; Simone Cristicchi, Juri Camisasca, Alice, Cristina Baggio join the Orchestra Maderna and the Choir of the Siena Cathedral. Angelo Privitera is at the keyboards, and he will also be in Cervia with the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano and Fabio Cinti, a winner of the 2018 Tenco competition for his performance of Battiato\u2019s songs.
\nTwo new sacred plays debut in the Basilica of San Vitale: Cristian Carrara was commissioned an opera dedicated to St. Francis and titled\u00a0Transitus<\/em><\/strong>, while young Ravenna-born Filippo Bittasi composed\u00a0History of a Bad Son<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Monica, St. Augustine\u2019s mother, takes centre stage. This year, the Festival also reaches the\u00a0Paradiso<\/em><\/strong>, the last part of the project\u00a0Public Call for the Divina Commedia<\/em>\u00a0that has seen Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari (Teatro delle Albe) turns Dante\u2019s masterpiece into plays. Martinelli also signs another production that looks up at the sky: Aristophanes\u2019s\u00a0The Birds<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0has been rewritten for the comical fury of seventy teenagers from Campania, within the collaboration with the Pompei Archaeological Site, where the play will premiere.<\/p>\n

The Sound of the Festival<\/strong><\/span>
\nThe symphonic section includes\u00a0Christoph Eschenbach<\/strong>\u2019s first visit to Ravenna to lead the Cherubini Youth Orchestra together with\u00a0Gidon Kremer<\/strong>\u00a0for Mieczyslaw Weinberg\u2019s Violin Concerto (Tchaikovsky\u2019s Symphony No. 5 completes the programme). The strings of the\u00a0Budapest Festival Orchestra<\/strong>\u00a0and of the Cherubini Orchestra tackle a chamber music programme featuring Bach, Tchaikovsky, and J. M. Haydn, and led by\u00a0Janos Pilz<\/strong>; the BFO returns to stage the day after, conducted by\u00a0Ivan Fischer<\/strong>\u00a0in Brahms\u2019s Symphony No. 3 and Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s\u00a0Scheherazade<\/em>. This edition\u2019s final concert will see\u00a0Riccardo Muti<\/strong>\u00a0and the Cherubini Orchestra together again, after the Roads of Friendship concerts, for Bizet\u2019s \u201cRoma\u201d Symphony, Anatoly Ljadov\u2019s\u00a0Enchanted Lake<\/em>, and Liszt\u2019s\u00a0Les pr\u00e9ludes<\/em>.
\nThe Early Music is represented by two returns: that of Jordi Savall and his ensemble Hesp\u00e8rion XXI for\u00a0Fol\u00edas & Canarios del Antiguo y del Nuevo Mundo<\/em>, and that of the\u00a0Orlando Consort<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0The Birth of the Renaissance<\/em>.
\nIn 2022, Ravenna turns again into the city of the cello: the\u00a0100 Cellos<\/strong> led by\u00a0Giovanni Sollima<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Enrico Melozzi\u00a0<\/strong>shall offer four days of events, ending in a Progressive Rock night with the participation of\u00a0PFM Premiata Forneria Marconi<\/strong>. Sicily is homeland to Sollima but also singer\u00a0Carmen Consoli<\/strong>, in Ravenna on her\u00a0Volevo fare la rockstar<\/em>\u00a0tour, and\u00a0La Rappresentante di Lista<\/strong>\u00a0for the first time on stage with a symphonic orchestra \u2013 the Corelli Orchestra led by Carmelo Emanuele Patti.
\nThe latter is the third of the three events in Lugo. The Pavaglione hosts the \u201cconfidential jazz\u201d star\u00a0Diana Krall<\/strong>\u00a0and a tribute to\u00a0Buena Vista Social Club<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0Roberto Fonseca Trio<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Eliades Ochoa<\/strong>. From the Cuban rhythm to the Irish one: at Palazzo S. Giacomo, a night dedicated to Irish folk music features\u00a0Martin Hayes<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Birkin Tree<\/strong>; but the first of the two nights in Russi pays tribute to Rap music with\u00a0Claver Gold<\/strong>\u00a0and the Corelli Orchestra.
\nIn Cervia-Milano Marittima,\u00a0Il Trebbo in musica 2.2<\/em>\u00a0opens on June 18 with\u00a0Corrado Augias<\/strong>\u00a0and includes, together with the mentioned tributes to Pasolini and Battiato, the premiere of\u00a0Zerocalcare<\/strong>\u2019s show with musician\u00a0Giancane<\/strong>,\u00a0Aldo Cazzullo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Moni Ovadia<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0Il duce delinquente<\/em>, singer-songwriter\u00a0Eduardo De Crescenzo<\/strong>\u00a0to rediscover the classical Neapolitan song.<\/p>\n

A Dancing Festival\u2026and the Stage of the World<\/strong><\/span>
\nIn\u00a0Les Italiens de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra de Paris<\/em><\/strong>, a gala evening created by principal Alessio Carbone, the centre stage is taken by the Italian dancers who are part of that legendary company that admits only a limited number of foreign performers. The highly-anticipated return of\u00a0B\u00e9jart Ballet Lausanne\u00a0<\/strong>brings to stage\u00a0t \u2018M et variations<\/em>\u00a0by Gil Roman, B\u00e9jart\u2019s successor as an artistic director, and\u00a0B\u00e9jart f\u00eate Maurice<\/em>\u00a0which includes, together with the tribute to Pasolini, a dedication to Micha van Hoecke, B\u00e9jart\u2019s collaborator of many years. Speaking of van Hoecke, who was the Festival\u2019s main choreographer and who passed away last year, the Festival remembers him also with\u00a0Canto per un poeta innamorato<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0curated by Miki Matsuse, inseparable collaborator and life partner. The\u00a0Hofesh Shechter II<\/strong>, a company of eight talented young performers, presents\u00a0Contemporary Dance 2.0<\/em>, the most recent work of the Israelian choreographer; whereas\u00a0Virtual Dance for Real People<\/em>, a project by Fondazione Nazionale della Danza \/ Aterballetto, offers the audience the chance to enjoy the performance live and virtually with VR headsets. The dance section is completed by two Dantesque events:\u00a0Paradiso<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0gruppo nanou<\/strong>, created with artist Alfredo Pirri and musician Bruno Dorella, and\u00a0Inferno – Terra del fuoco<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Compagnia Artemis Danza \/ Monica Casadei<\/strong>.
\nThe Festival\u2019s programme comprises the most recent works by the local theatre companies: besides the works by Eugenio Sideri, Elena Bucci, Marco Martinelli and Ermanna Montanari,\u00a0Fanny & Alexander<\/strong>\u00a0celebrates its thirty years by bringing to stage both the video-concert polyptych\u00a0The Garden<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Addio fantasmi<\/em>, based on Nadia Terranova\u2019s novel (Einaudi, a finalist in the 2019 Strega Prize).<\/p>\n

Autumn Trilogy<\/strong><\/span>
\nFrom 31 October to 6 November, the Autumn Trilogy celebrates its 10th anniversary with the same formula that has made it into one of the Festival\u2019s most eagerly awaited and beloved events: night after night, three opera titles will be performed on the stage of the Alighieri Theatre. This year the protagonists are Mozart and Da Ponte\u2019s masterpieces:\u00a0The Marriage of Figaro<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0Don Giovanni<\/em><\/strong>, and\u00a0Cos\u00ec fan tutte<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0conducted respectively by\u00a0Giovanni Conti<\/strong>,\u00a0Erina Yashima<\/strong>, and\u00a0Vladimir Ovodok<\/strong>. The project sees the Festival join its forces \u2013 the “home” ensembles named after Luigi Cherubini and the young conductors who were students at Riccardo Muti’s Academy \u2013 with two of Europe’s oldest theatres, the Swedish Drottningholms Slottsteater and the Op\u00e9ra Royal de Versailles, for the productions directed by Ivan Alexandre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
