{"id":15637,"date":"2019-05-17T10:32:29","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T08:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/?p=15637"},"modified":"2019-05-18T10:36:35","modified_gmt":"2019-05-18T08:36:35","slug":"vespers-at-san-vitale-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/vespers-at-san-vitale-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Vespers at San Vitale 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Thirty-eight concerts in the most beloved of the city\u2019s Byzantine Basilicas, and one of the eights monuments in Ravenna part of the UNESCO World Heritage site; nineteen different programmes that travel across centuries of sacred music, from Palestrina to Bach and from Vivaldi to John Cage, from the Baroque age to the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, from orthodox chants to the Marian devotion, among mystery plays, masses, lauds, original works, and &#8211; why not? &#8211; <em>live electronics<\/em>. When, if not at the time of the Vespers? Where, if not in the Basilica of San Vitale, shining with mosaics? From June 6 to July 14, in collaboration with the Opera di Religione dell\u2019Arcidiocesi di Ravenna-Cervia and this year also with the patronage of the Pontifical Council for Culture, the 30<sup>th<\/sup> edition of Ravenna Festival again features the <em>Vespers at San Vitale<\/em>, the daily pilgrimage at 7 pm, in the company of choirs, ensembles, soloists, including 14 proposals selected through an international call. A wealth of history, art, and spirituality to discover with the symbolic 1-euro ticket. <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The opening event is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/e-immediatamente-diventai-sapiente\/\"><em>\u2026e immediatamente diventai sapiente<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 6, 7, 9, 10<\/strong>), a mystery play on Hildegard von Bingen, created by the Music Research and Production Centre Agon on Guido Barbieri\u2019s text, while <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/domus-supra-petram\/\"><em>Domus supra petram<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 8<\/strong>) of the LiberaVox Ensemble focuses on Giovanni da Palestrina. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/salmi\/\"><em>Salmi<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 11 to 13<\/strong>) is a live electronics performance by Maurizio Alfonsi, in a dialogue with the church\u2019s architecture. Pieces dating back to the 12<sup>th<\/sup> and 13<sup>th<\/sup> centuries feature in<span style=\"color: #800000;\"> <a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/ave-gloriosa-mater\/\"><em>Ave gloriosa mater<\/em><\/a> <\/span>(<strong>June 14 and 15<\/strong>) of the recorder duo Il Giardino delle Muse; while Taiwanese cellist Jo-Chan Lin performs four of the six Bach\u2019s suites for <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/violoncello-solo\/\"><em>Violoncello solo<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 17 and 18<\/strong>). In <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/oreb\/\"><em>Oreb<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 19 and 20<\/strong>) the soloist is Dimitri Grechi Espinoza\u2019s sax, discovering the \u201cbreath\u201d of sacred places. Another Marian concert, this time with Baroque music, with <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/ecce-maria\/\"><em>Ecce Maria<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 21 to 23<\/strong>) of the Ensemble Dolci Accenti, and a tribute to the \u201cprince of musicians\u201d Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa with <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/pulvis-et-umbra-sumus\/\"><em>Pulvus et umbra sumus<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 24 to 26<\/strong>) of the viol quartet Consorteria delle Tenebre. Three single concerts follow: Nektaria Karantzi\u2019s <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/il-canto-greco-bizantino\/\"><em>Il canto greco-bizantino<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 27<\/strong>), 20<sup>th<\/sup> century composers in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/cantar-sacro\/\"><em>Cantar sacro<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>June 28<\/strong>) with the Coro Ludus Vocalis, and Antonio Caldara\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/missa-dolorosa\/\"><em>Missa dolorosa<\/em><\/a> (<strong>June 29<\/strong>) with the Coro Ecce Novum. In the footsteps of Saint Francis of Assisi with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/cantar-francesco\/\"><em>Cantar Francesco<\/em><\/a> (<strong>June 30 and July 1<\/strong>) of the vocal ensemble Armoniosoincanto, performing with Daniele Di Bonaventura\u2019s bandoneon. <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/ave-maria\/\"><em>Ave Maria<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>July 2<\/strong>) features soprano Annalisa Ferrarini and harpist Carla They, while the ensemble I Musici del Gran Principe proposes Alessandro Melani\u2019s <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/i-concerti-spirituali\/\"><em>I concerti spirituali<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>July 3 and 4<\/strong>). <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/echi-riflessi\/\"><em>Echi riflessi<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>July 5 to 7<\/strong>) of the vocal ensemble Gocce d\u2019Armonia tackles authors distant in time but sharing the same themes. Another tribute to the Byzantine heritage with <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/melodie-bizantine\/\"><em>Melodie bizantine<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>July 8 to 10<\/strong>) of the Irmos Ensemble, followed by soprano Giulia Zaniboni\u2019s <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/sacro-contemporaneo\/\"><em>Sacro contemporaneo<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>July 11<\/strong>) featuring contemporary music. The only concert hosted at the Refectory Hall of S. Vitale, a part of the city\u2019s National Museum, is <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ravennafestival.org\/en\/events\/salotto-byron\/\"><em>Salotto Byron<\/em><\/a><\/span> (<strong>July 12<\/strong>), an homage of the RaRe Duo to the English poet who arrived in Ravenna 200 years ago.
