International call for concerts in the Basilica of San Vitale

Every day at 7 pm, the time of the Vespers, the Basilica of San Vitale – shining with gold and mosaics – is again the protagonist of an intense programme of concerts presented in collaboration with the Opera di Religione della Diocesi di Ravenna. The “Vespers at San Vitale”, from May 25 to July 2, are an appointment with beauty, suspended between the charms of sacred music and the solemn elegance of the Basilica, one of the eights monuments in Ravenna recognised UNESCO World Heritage sites. The return of the Vespers this year, after the successful first edition in 2016, sees an important addition: the programme will feature concerts selected through an international call for choirs, ensembles, and soloists (deadline: January 31st 2017).
This year “Vespers at San Vitale” is also the title of a call for projects aimed to the selection of concerts to be held in the Basilica of San Vitale, which will create a mosaic of events able to guide the audience through centuries of sacred music, exploring a tradition rich in surprises, enchantments, and faith. This way the Festival, that since its very first edition has featured a special relationship with the city monuments and every year inhabits the Basilicas with refined programmes performed by extraordinary ensembles and choirs, renews its tribute to the artistic, historic, and religious heritage the Basilica of San Vitale represents, as a symbol of Ravenna in the Byzantine age.
The international call “Vespers at San Vitale” is open to choirs, ensembles, and soloists – without any limit of age or nationality – to select concerts no longer than 30-40 minutes. The proposals must show high musical quality but also comply with the sacred context of the venue, as well as distinguish themselves for originality, especially concerning rarely-performed repertoires and regional traditions. The selected concerts will be included in this “festival within the festival” as a part of the programme of the 28th edition.
Week after week, evening after evening, the “Vespers at San Vitale” will accompany this year’s Festival, enriching the traditional programme with events held at an unusual time of the day, thus offering the audience of locals and tourists a precious chance to be captivated by the charm of San Vitale.
