“Young Artists for Dante”, the international competition organised by the Ravenna Festival and the Municipality of Ravenna in collaboration with the Dante Alighieri Society, returns in 2017. An absolute novelty in 2016, this series of events, which stages a tribute to the “Supreme Poet” through the inventions and the artistic languages of a new generation of artists, is already a must. In the heart of Ravenna’s “Dantesque” quarters and next to the Poet’s emblematic tomb, the Ancient Franciscan Cloisters will provide a venue for a daily programme of events selected through the “Young Artists for Dante” international Call for projects. These events will be scheduled from May 25 to July 2 at 11 a.m., and will complement and enrich the wider programme of the Festival.

The Call for Projects is open to young artists and Dante enthusiasts, and especially to groups, companies and associations the majority of whose members are under 30. Events will last up to 40 minutes, and will be aimed at promoting the tangible and intangible heritage of Dante Alighieri. The Call is open to all kinds of performative languages. 67 proposals from all over Italy were received in 2016: they revealed an incredibly rich panorama, alive with all sorts of creative academic/artistic collaborations, mixing theatre, dance, live music and, more unexpectedly, architecture, video art and creative writing. The possibilities for interpreting Dante’s work with unprecedented freshness and originality are indeed endless and amazing.

The selected shows will be produced by Ravenna Festival and included in the official programme of the 2017 edition as a dedicated section focussing on the “Area of silence”, the medieval quarters of Ravenna, where Dante once lived and his tomb now lies, holding the mortal remains of the “Father of the Italian language”. The Festival’s vocation (almost a mission!) of staging events and performances in the city’s most symbolical corners, a living testimony to its millenary heritage, has found a most elegant frame for its Dantesque tribute in the Cloisters. The Ancient Franciscan Cloisters are owned, managed, and kindly made available by the “Cassa di Risparmio di Ravenna” Foundation. The Cloisters host the Centro Dantesco dei Frati Minori Conventuali with their precious Library, featuring 20 thousand volumes on Dante-related topics, and the Museo Dantesco managed by the Opera di Dante.

“Young Artists for Dante” highlights the international vocation of the Festival while it offers a chance to further creative connections with the schools and the artistic subjects in the region. In 2017 collaborations have been activated with the Artistic Secondary School “P.L. Nervi – G. Severini”, which has received a commission for this segment of the programme, and with Cantieri, a cultural association that since 1994 promotes and stimulate the development of a culture and practice on original research and original dance, and which will support this call through its networks dedicated to young dance authors.
