On a volcanic island in the middle of the Mediterranean, a solitary General is charged with making a census of those who drowned on fruitless sea voyages to Europe, and now lie at the bottom of the sea. He is trying to bring order to an irrational state of bookkeeping, but the numbers just don’t add up, and justice needs be brought to the memory of the dead.
It was back in 2010 that Marco Martinelli signed this dark tale, which made its début at the Ravenna Festival. But, as in the Latin dictum, de te fabula narratur, in his extraordinary monologue, one of Martinelli’s most compelling screenplays, the story applies to all of us. And yet, ten years on, we cannot claim innocence from those dead who, year after year, reach our ears like a string of dull numbers.
