The walk to freedom became absolutely important in human life and the world with Jesus of Nazareth, whose tender and loving look stirred a new desire for truth and freedom in people’s minds: “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” A new anthropology was then introduced into the world with the concepts of person and human dignity, totally unknown in Hellenistic and Roman cultures – there is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female. This brought about a new order in human society and in the laws that regulate it. This year’s five liturgies will testify to the great variety of forms and expressions blossomed during this long walk to freedom, which began on the dusty roads of Palestine and then spread to all cultures, latitudes and times.
