What's better than Händel's music for a barge trip on the River Thames? King George I must have had a similar thought on July 17th, 1717, when he had a concert performed on a barge close to his. The King was said to have loved it so much that he ordered musicians to repeat the Water Music suites three times (the royal party only got ashore at three a.m.). Much more serious - but not less merry - was the occasion for Music for the Royal Fireworks: the pyrotechnic display on 27 April, 1749 was meant to celebrate the end of the War of the Austrian Succession and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. The enormous wooden building where the orchestra was performing caught fire during the show, but who cares? The music lives on, and this is enough.
